What is Moxibustion and How Can It Benefit Your Health?

Moxibustion is an ancient therapy rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves the burning of mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near or on specific acupuncture points to stimulate healing. While acupuncture uses needles to activate energy flow, moxibustion uses heat to promote circulation, strengthen the body’s immune system, and restore balance.

How Does Moxibustion Work?

Moxibustion works by warming specific points on the body, which can:

  • Stimulate qi (energy) flow

  • Improve blood circulation

  • Enhance immune function

  • Relieve pain and inflammation

The therapy can be performed directly (placing burning moxa on the skin) or indirectly (holding it near the skin or using moxa sticks). Both methods are gentle and typically well-tolerated.

Common Uses and Benefits of Moxibustion

Moxibustion is used for a variety of health concerns, including:

  1. Pain Relief – Helps alleviate joint pain, arthritis, and menstrual cramps.

  2. Digestive Health – Supports digestion and addresses bloating or abdominal discomfort.

  3. Boosting Immunity – Stimulates the body’s natural defenses against illness.

  4. Gynecological Health – Commonly used for menstrual pain and infertility.

  5. Fatigue and Weakness – Recharges energy and supports overall wellness.

  6. Turning a Breech Baby - A safe way to help a baby who is breech to naturally move to the head-down position.

Safety and Considerations

Moxibustion is safe when performed by a trained practitioner so consult with one to make sure it is the right treatment for your condition. Some precautions include:

  • Avoiding direct burns on sensitive skin

  • Not using during high fever or infections

  • Consulting a practitioner if pregnant or with chronic conditions

Moxa Season

I took a class recently about moxibustion and learned about moxa season. There are a couple times a year between fall and winter and winter and spring when our bodies are the most vulnerable to illness but also the most receptive to the warming and healing effects of moxa therapy. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) explains the idea that the body's Mingmen (Gate of Vitality) opens during these periods, making it crucial to use moxa to strengthen immunity, build energy reserves, and prevent winter or spring illnesses. These times are in November and right around the Lunar or Chinese New Year.

Final Thought

Moxibustion is a time-honored therapy that compliments acupuncture and other wellness practices. If you haven’t experienced it, I recommend you try it and take advantage of moxa season!
